BLACK VOICES
"I am calling out white people who write about racism and do anti-racist training. You have centred yourselves in the movement, stolen ideas that Black, Indigenous and racialized people have been teaching for hundreds of years and shifted the narrative in a way to benefit you. Yes white people listen to you when you speak and close their ears to everyone else. Stop giving them a choice. Remove yourselves. WHAT WHITE PEOPLE CAN DO - stop writing about racism alone - only write and provide training with someone who has lived experience with racism - take only 35% of the earning that you make from anti-racist work - help white people understand racism but do it for free like we do most often and if yu get an honorarium donate it to a community organization that helps people who have lived experiences with racism - stop stealing our work and putting it into books - we don't care if you seem to give some credit for 'borrowing' our words - stop telling eeryone that white people can only hear/accept/learn about racism from you - showcase those with lived experiences in anti-racist work in preparation for your exit - after you have done the above for 5 years retire from making money off our backs and our pain" - Dr. Delores Mullings, Social Work Professor MUN

‘It’s up to all of us – Black, white, everyone – no matter how well-meaning we think we might be, to do the honest, uncomfortable work of rooting it out. It starts with self-examination and listening to those whose lives are different from our own. It ends with justice, compassion, and empathy that manifests in our lives and on our streets.’ – Michelle Obama
"Race and racism is a reality that so many of us grow up learning to just deal with. But if we ever hope to move past it, it can’t just be on people of colour to deal with it. It’s up to all of us – black, white, everyone – no matter how well-meaning we think we might be, to do the honest, uncomfortable work of rooting it out." – Michelle Obama
"We have to remember that for millions of Americans, being treated differently on account of race is tragically, painfully, maddeningly 'normal' - whether it's while dealing with the health care system, or interacting with the criminal justice system, or jogging down the street, or just watching birds in a park. This shouldn't be 'normal' in 2020 America. It can't be 'normal'. If we want our children to grow up in a nation that lives up to its highest ideals, we can and must be better." – Barack Obama
